City staff honoured in Long Service Awards ceremony

On Thursday, 3 November 2022 the City of Cape Town’s Corporate Services
Directorate celebrated its long-serving employees at an event held at the Cape
Town Civic Centre. Staff were honoured for their years of service ranging
between 10 and 40 years.
Collectively, the long service awards honour staff who have put in a total of 4 590 years of service. This includes Executive Director for Corporate Services, Ernest Sass, who has put in 25 years of service over his career with the City. Also on the list are many long-serving staff who go about their duties diligently from behind the scenes, and who are the real heroes that ensure the excellent service delivery to Cape Town's residents that we can be proud of.
'The City of Cape Town is a world-class employer that is committed to creating a fair working environment that allows us to recognise and reward staff for their service to the City, and to the residents of Cape Town,' said Alderman Theresa Uys, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services.
Tyrone Pellew, from the Facilities Management Department, started off temping for the road resurfacing team before doing his national service. He then joined the City as a full-time employee and has been working tirelessly for the past 30 years to ensure that the City's Emergency Management Plan is kept current. He also coordinates the evacuation drills that keep City staff safe in the event of calamity.
'Working for the City provided me with the opportunity to have a secure job. It is hard work, but I see my role as critical,' said Tyrone.
Lenie Cloete is one of the City's longest-serving staff members, having joined the municipality in 1982. She started off as a cleaner, and was later promoted to the position of clerk in the Facilities Management Department.
'The day I was appointed to the clerk position, I was extremely overwhelmed and excited, as it was a whole new change in my life. I take my duties as an employee very seriously and always go the extra mile,' said Lenie.
Neil Meissenheimer has also served the City for 40 years. In his role in Executive and Councillor Support Operations, he reports that he has worked with seven mayors, six city managers and with councillors from all political parties.
'It's a great pleasure to render an effective and efficient service to residents and to Council,' said Neil.
'A huge congratulations to our long-serving members of staff. We cannot do what we do without you. A key to the success of the City's service delivery is the institutional expertise of its officials. Not only does your knowledge guide decision-making, but an effective mentoring and training programme also ensures continuity as younger employees join the City', said Alderman Uys.
